Cam Heyward: You either learn and be responsible or you don’t play
When former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger criticized his former teammates as “pampered” this summer, current Steelers defensive end Cam Heyward questioned the idea that players don’t have a “first team” mentality.
That mentality has yet to help the Steelers win too many games this year. They fell to 2-6 with Sunday’s loss to the Eagles, and Heyward made some pointed comments about what needs to change in the second half of the season.
“Either you learn and be responsible or you are not going to play” Heyward said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com. “We’re going into Week 8 and we’ve all been given opportunities to see it. If you can’t do that, you won’t play. This goes for everyone. I am not distinguishing any type. We all have to be responsible. Myself included. As a leader, I must take most of the blame. It’s easy to point out [fingers]. It’s better to look in the mirror and say, “I need to get better.” So I’m going to use this time to really do it.”
The Steelers have a bye in Week Nine and have a lot of work to do in all phases of the game before they return to the field. If that work doesn’t produce results, Heyward will probably be right about changes coming to the cast of characters on the field.
