Mark Sanchez confuses Chuck Knoblauch and Tim Wakefield
Mark Sanchez is quickly establishing himself as a solid NFL analyst, but he doesn’t seem to have a similar knack for baseball.
sunday afternoon Sanchez (seen above last month) and see play-by-play Kevin Kugler were on the Fox call for the Seattle Seahawks–New York Giants game In the first half, Seattle kicker Jason Myers converted a 35-yard field goal that tipped on the line and wobbled through the uprights, prompting Sanchez to reach deep for a baseball analogy.
“I mean that thing looked like a Chuck Knoblauch knuckleball, what the hell?” Sanchez said as the broadcast went to commercial.

What the hell really. Knoblauch was not a knuckleball pitcher, nor was he a pitcher at all during his decade-long major league basketball career. After Sanchez was alerted to the fumble, the former NFL quarterback quickly looked for an opening to acknowledge Knoblauch’s mistake.
With Fox cameras showing Giants head coach Brian Daboll laughing on the sidelines, Sanchez took it as an opportunity to poke fun at himself. “It’s like, ‘Did you think that was bad?’ I mean, Sanchez dropped a Knoblauch with a knuckleball and he meant Tim Wakefield. What an idiot!’ Come on boy, find out!”

In Sanchez’s defense, while Knoblauch wasn’t a knuckleball pitcher, the infielder was he caught a case of the chips late in his career. This caused him to throw some wild balls to first base. Knoblauch’s pitch deteriorated so much that he made an errant throw into the stands, striking out Keith Olbermann’s mother in the head.
While Sanchez’s Knoblauch-knuckleball metaphor may have failed, it was nice of the Fox analyst to give baseball fans something to talk about Sunday. Despite being in the middle of the World Series, MLB coyly waved a white flag at the NFL this year and avoided scheduling a Sunday game for the first time since 1947. But MLB was still in contention over this NFL broadcast in particular, between the Knoblauch de Sánchez line and referee Jerome Boger quoting “the technical staff of the Seattle Mariners.”
