MW Football Weekly Release – October 31st

AROUND THE WEST MOUNTAIN

  • Since the 2019 season, the Mountain West has won 19 games against 5 independent opponents, including 16 against the Pac-12. That’s the most wins in that time span among all non-autonomous-5 conferences.
  • In the last 18 years, the Mountain West has been the top non-autonomous-5 conference 10 times and second five times.
  • The Mountain West produced the first non-automatically qualifying FBS team in a BCS bowl game (Utah – 2005 Fiesta Bowl) and the College Football Playoff (Boise State – 2014 Fiesta Bowl).
  • After Wyoming’s double overtime win over Tulsa on Sept. 3 and Air Force’s win over Navy on Oct. 1, the Mountain West now has a 17-11 record against Conference opponents American Athletics.
  • Nevada Senior Safety Bentley Sanders is a semifinalist for the 2022 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, the only DB outside of the Autonomous-5 to earn a spot on the list.
  • San Jose State senior linebacker Kyle Harmon has totaled 395 career tackles, just eight behind the fifth-most in MW history, currently held by New Mexico’s Dakota Cox (403; 2013-16).
  • Nevada senior running back war hero has rushed for 3,654 career yards, fourth most among active FBS players. Taua is just 139 yards shy of tying for the fifth most in league history.
  • Fresno State’s senior quarterback Jake Haener has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 23 consecutive games, dating back to October 24, 2019. This is the third longest streak in Conference history. Carson Strong (Nevada) and Derek Carr (Fresno State) hold the league record with a touchdown pass in 26 straight games.
  • Over the past 18 seasons, the MW has captured the Bowl Challenge Cup five times and has the third-best bowl game winning percentage among the 10 FBS conferences (.583), behind only the SEC (.621) and Sun Belt (. 593).

LOTTERY ELIGIBILITY

Boise State (6-2) and Wyoming (6-3) became bowl eligible on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Broncos are bowl eligible for the 25th straight season, the third-longest active streak nationally behind only Ohio State and Georgia, while the Cowboys are headed to the postseason for the sixth time in seven seasons

BOISE STATE FILE

  • Three-game winners against FBS opponents with a .500 or better winning percentage, more wins than Central Florida (2), Cincinnati (1) and the same number as Coastal Carolina.
  • One of only 12 FBS teams undefeated in conference play in 2022.
  • After inserting QB Taylen Green in the starting lineup, Boise State is averaging 437.3 yards of total offense and 35.8 points per game. In the previous four games, the Broncos averaged just 283.3 yards and 22 points.
