Deebo Samuel’s hilarious line after reading the 49ers’ initial contract offer

Aside from the Jimmy Garoppolo saga that saw the veteran quarterback go, well, nowhere, the biggest story of the 49ers’ offseason was the Deebo Samuel contract.

The drama finally ended on July 31 when Samuel agreed to a three-year extension worth $73.5 million.

Samuel and his agent, Tory Dandy of the Creative Artists Agency, did not accept the 49ers’ first offer, but it drew a hilarious reaction from the star wide receiver when he discussed the deal in a “Overtime SZN” feature.

—Damn, that’s a lot of chicken! the 49ers star exclaimed.

He is not wrong.

The new contract, which includes the sixth-highest cap hit ($25.2 million) among NFL wide receivers in 2022, represents a significant increase in pay compared to $495,000, $844,800 and $1.1 million that Samuel is winning in his first three seasons in the NFL.

“When he told me the offer I was like, ‘You’re lying,'” Mahogany Jones, Samuel’s girlfriend, told the feature.

“We knew this day was coming, but to actually see it … We both sat back and said, ‘Wow.'”

“I’ve never seen these kinds of numbers in my life,” Samuel added. “Especially with my name next to it.”

Still, Dandy wasn’t satisfied. There were elements of the contract that had yet to be amended.

“I haven’t answered that yet,” Dandy said in the feature, which was filmed in July. “We need [increase] which guarantees money. This is not the NBA. Even if you have a large starting number, you need to make sure you have the right collateral structure. … You have to make sure you’re patient.”

Samuel and Dandy returned to general manager John Lynch and finally patched things up in the early days of training camp to the delight of the 49ers Faithful.

A hamstring injury forced Samuel to miss out 49ers win 31-14 over the Los Angeles Ramsbut he played in the team’s first seven games, recording 525 total yards and three touchdowns.

Samuel and the 49ers rest Sunday during their Week 9 bye, but will return to the field on Nov. 13 for a nonconference contest against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.
