Sully says: When we don’t live up to expectations, we take it to heart

Pittsburgh’s winless streak is now seven games (0-6-1) after a 3-2 loss to Seattle on Saturday at PPG Paints Arena.

After a goalless first, Sidney Crosby got on the board at 5:24 of the second period to put Pittsburgh up 1-0 before the Kraken tied the score.

Yanni Gourde gave Seattle a 2-1 lead late in the period just as the Penguins rallied. Technically, they were perfect on the PK, but couldn’t convert any of their three power plays.

Jake Guentzel tied it in the third, but unfortunately, Brandon Tanev scored the winner with 3:39 left in regulation to give Seattle the win.

Tristan Jarry made 25 saves, including one on a short break.

Here’s what Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan had to say after the game.

Kris Letang spoke of the group still being confident despite the streak. That’s your observation, and how do you maintain that confidence and not let a lack of confidence creep into the room under those circumstances?

Well, it’s not easy, because that’s the human side of sports. When you’re going through a tough time, it’s not always easy to make sure you play a safe game and play an assertive game. But I think the solution is just to make sure that we stay in the moment and don’t get overwhelmed by all the noise around. We just have to stay in the moment, focus on the process and find ourselves in it. That’s what we’re trying to do.

Many of the losses have been adjusted. Losing advantages in the third period; tonight, it’s tied late and Brandon Tanev scores. Does it make it harder for the team to have these close games? Or is it easier because they know they’re right there and it’s just a matter of getting over it?

I’m not sure I have a great answer for you. I think at the end of the day, you lose, and that hurts. Because these guys are competitive guys and they care. And when we don’t live up to the expectations we have of each other and don’t get results more consistently than we have lately, these guys take it to heart. We all do it. I know how much they care, and like I said, we just need to dig a little deeper. We have to be more determined. I think we need to be more vigilant in some of the critical moments of the game. I thought when we got the second goal to tie it, it was a big boost to the bench. We had a good amount of momentum in the third period. I thought in the third period, we had a lot of momentum. So from that point of view it’s disheartening. But we’ve got to figure out what we’re going to learn from it, and then we’ve got to come together and prepare to win a game, the one in front of us.

We saw you play around a bit with your leading lines and combos. Has there been any consideration to do the same on the back as well?

We have. There have been many different combinations above the blue line boards. You’ve seen a fair amount of PO playing with Kris Letang; with you have you seen Dumo Jeff Petry; you have seen Jan Rutta play with Marcus Pettersson. There’s been a lot going on in the middle of the game, game to game. We’re trying to figure out what we can do as a coaching staff to try to get a spark here, and moving people around throughout the game is part of that.

Do you think grief kills (which ranked 28th in the league coming into play) was he able to take any steps in the right direction tonight? Overall, how would you rate how this unit went?

I thought they did a really good job tonight. They had limited zone time. I thought we did a good job of making it difficult to get in. We were active for the ice. They score well when one expires, I guess it could be considered a 5v5 goal. It was a bit of a broken play. But I thought overall it was much better.
