Evander Kane: Ice hockey star ‘stable’ after opponent accidentally skated on his wrist
Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane was rushed to the hospital after suffering a deep cut on his left wrist during his team’s win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old suffered injury in the second period after falling to the ice during a collision. In the resulting scramble for the puck, opponent Pat Maroon accidentally skated on Kane’s wrist and an instant pool of blood formed on the ice.
A clearly worried Kane immediately stood up and rushed towards the medical staff, grabbing his wrist. He was later admitted to the hospital.
“After suffering a wrist injury early in the second period, Evander Kane is stable and has been taken to the hospital for a procedure later tonight,” the Oilers said. he said on Twitter shortly after the incident.
The Oilers pulled off a hard-fought victory at Florida’s Amalie Arena, but the team’s thoughts were with Kane after the game.
“First of all, all the members of our team, everyone in our organization […] they’re thinking about Evander Kane,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft he told reporters.
“When an accident like this happens on the ice, that’s our first thought. It’s never fun to see one of your teammates in that kind of position.
“Shout out to the great medical staff we have in our organization and the people here at the arena who responded quickly and made sure he was OK.
“The news I’ve gotten so far, and it’s very limited, is that it’s in a good place and it’s well looked after.”
Players close to Kane appeared shocked by the injury and many called for medical staff to come to his aid.
“The medical staff were amazing and got him the help he needed right away, so we’re very grateful,” goalkeeper Jack Campbell told reporters.
Seconds NHL.com, Kane signed a four-year deal worth $20.5 million earlier this year. He currently has five goals and eight assists in 13 games this season.
