Nicolas Aube-Kubel was ejected early in the second period after a bad hit on Lightning defenseman Callan Foote.

The hit is indefensible and will likely earn a suspension from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

One player went north-south and the other went east-west.

Aube-Kubel got the shot as Foote carried the puck and threw it into the offensive zone. Aube-Kubel’s shoulder connected directly with Foote’s face. The game was immediately called as Foote lay on the ice.

Shortly after the impact, a dazed Foote stood up under his own power, bleeding from the nose. He was immediately ushered down the tunnel and into the Lightning locker room.

Aube-Kubel was initially given a major penalty for an illegal head check. As the officials checked the view on the ice to make sure NAK made head contact, chaos broke out on the ice among the remaining players on the ice. Garnet Hathaway dropped the gloves with Pat Maroon as other players grabbed each other.

Once the fight was over and the other players separated from each other, the officials again reviewed NAK’s success. They confirmed it was a head shot. The officials ejected Aube-Kubel, giving him a five-minute major penalty.

For fighting after the whistle, Hathaway and Foote received five-minute majors for fighting and 10-minute misconducts.

The play ended up boosting the Capitals. The Caps killed most of the five minutes, having arguably their best offensive opportunities while down. NAK penalty taker Sonny Milano scored on a breakaway after leaving the penalty area.

The Capital One Arena erupted after the goal.

As for Aube-Kubel, he has never been suspended before, but one is likely to come from DoPS. By Tarik El-BashirNAK has been fined twice: $2,687 for kneeling (10/24/2021) and $4,633 for roughing (1/19/2021).
