Jim Calhoun and Rip Hamilton will be inducted into the University Hall of Fame.

In a recent UConn Men’s Basketball in practice, there was Calhoun, the architect of the program, jotting down things about what he saw from different players.

“(Alex Karaban) is going to be a player,” Calhoun noted. “A tough guy, he wants to be a player, he thinks he’s very good and that’s great, as long as he dedicates himself to training. And it seems he does.”

What about San Diego transfer Joey Calcaterra?

“I don’t know a lot,” Calhoun said, “but he’s having a stroke.”

Dan Hurley and his staff value Calhoun’s input, including a two-and-a-half-hour talk not long ago, and why wouldn’t they? Calhoun is a Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, a three-time national champion coach who turned around programs at Northeastern, UConn and, most recently, Saint Joseph’s University.

On Sunday, he will be formally inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame alongside Richard “Rip” Hamilton, the MVP of UConn’s first Final Four in 1999.
