Chiefs-Chargers: Chiefs call up Kemp, Powell for Sunday Night Football
According to the league’s transaction report, the Chiefs will move up special teams tight end Marcus Kemp and second-year cornerback Cornell Powell. Both will return to the practice squad on Monday.
Kemp’s promotion to the practice squad is his third and final call-up after recording six offensive tackles and 21 special teams tackles in Week 7. San Francisco 49ers and 24 against special teams in Week 9 Tennessee Titans. Coach Andy Reid suggested the Chiefs would call up Kemp this week, and he could be a role player in the offense while also helping to fill the role of sidelined cornerback Chris Lammons.
If he is active for the game, Powell will make his regular season debut. The Chiefs selected the 25-year-old in the fifth round 2021 NFL Draft, and although he didn’t make the 53 roster, he stayed with the team on the practice squad. Powell remained with the club and improved greatly in the 2022 training camp before missing the starting roster again.
Considering the Chiefs brought in Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Justin Watson and Skyy Moore this season, it may have been a numbers game more than anything else. Now, due to injury, Powell may finally get his chance.
Sunday’s opener will be made up of Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney, Watson, Moore, Kemp and Powell.
