Mother of God continues to be a big factor in the College Football Playoff rankings, and that continued this week with the 18th-ranked after improving to 7-3 after a win vs. navy. Now, looking to keep that momentum going, the host Fighting Irish Boston College in South Bend on Saturday afternoon. This will be the last home game for Notre Dame, and it won’t be against a traditional opponent, but certainly a familiar one. The two teams have played 26 times since 1975 and every year from 1992 to 2004, with Notre Dame holding a 17-9 advantage in the series, which includes eight straight wins.

The Fighting Irish have won seven of eight since an 0-2 start, with two wins coming against teams currently ranked in the CFP’s top 15 (Clemson, North Carolina) and two wins over teams that were ranked in the AP poll at the time (Syracuse, BYU). First-year coach Marcus Freeman has guided this team through injury issues and disappointing losses to now have a chance to finish the season in a major game with a couple more wins.

Boston College, on the other hand, isn’t headed to a bowl game, having lost seven games already this season, but this Eagles team is still fighting, as evidenced by a second-half comeback win at NC State just last week. Jeff Heffley’s group has also dealt with a host of injury issues, but if last week is any indication, the Eagles can still be a dangerous team against ranked opponents.

Notre Dame vs. Boston College: Need to know

Notre Dame has had success against the ACC: When the ACC announced that Notre Dame was joining the conference as a full member in all sports except football, the two conferences also announced the creation of a scheduling agreement with the Fighting Irish that includes multiple games against ACC opponents. While the deal provided some memorable on-campus showdowns for several ACC programs, the results were clearly tilted in Notre Dame’s favor. Notre Dame is 39-7 against ACC teams since making the 2014 schedule agreement and the Fighting Irish are currently riding a 27-game regular-season winning streak against ACC opponents.

Boston College QB Phil Jurkavets injured heading into battle against his former team: Jurkavec transferred to Boston College from Notre Dame after his sophomore year in 2019 and told The Boston Globe back in August that he “disappointed with some things” since his time with the program. Any issues Jurkauc and his family may have with Brian Kelly don’t have as much resonance now that the former Notre Dame head coach is now at LSU, but it’s still a program, by which he joined right out of pity for a school that left him feeling disillusioned, leading to a career-changing transfer to Boston College.. Had Yurkavec been 100 percent healthy, there likely would have been more hype about this potential destination “revenge games.” However, Yurkavets did not play after being knocked out in a loss to End October 29. Freshman Emmett Morehead went 1-1 in place of Yurkauts, losing seven points to the team duke at home and then led a two-touchdown comeback at NC State on the road last week.

Jurkavec is officially listed as the starting quarterback on Boston College’s depth chart this week. However, Heffley also said he is in concussion protocol and “fighting to get back” after “a bunch of other injuries.” So, we can only find out if there will be a revenge storyline in this showdown during the game.

Deep backcourt helps power Notre Dame’s offense: Injuries at quarterback and wide receiver have forced the Fighting Irish’s offense back into play in 2022, and fortunately, this team has a deep backroom that was ready to take on the challenge. Notre Dame is the only power conference team in the nation to have three running backs with 85 or more carries this season, with Audrik Esteem (125), Logan Diggs (125) and Chris Tyree (87), leading a ground attack that topped 200 yards per game five times this season.

Notre Dame vs. Boston College Prediction, Picks

Notre Dame had some flaws in its 35-32 win against Navy, but the Fighting Irish also had the upper hand most of the day. The way Navy shut down Notre Dame’s run and kept moving the ball should be a concern, but the Fighting Irish also went on a 14-0 run and never relinquished the lead, providing answers every time Navy made a push. I think there was extra preparation for this home game against Boston College USCand some of that preparation will pay off in a more expansive display on Saturday. Prediction: Notre Dame -21
