The future of CFP expansion rests in the hands of the Rose Bowl

The Chalice of the Rose stands on the clock.

The CFP Executive Council of Presidents does not plan to grant the Rose Bowl its request for an exclusive Jan. 1 window in future iterations of the expanded playoffs, sources said, and they have given the sport’s oldest active bowl a deadline.

Assuming this is the final hurdle to early playoff expansion, the Rose Bowl and its officials have been given a few days to make what could be a monumental decision for the future of college football’s postseason. The Rose Bowl could agree to expand the playoffs as early as 2024, or delay expansion until ’26.
