The Tennessee Volunteers lost in the College Football Playoff qualifier on Saturday.

Tennessee fell on the road to Gamecox’s South Carolina in a game in which it was unable to stop Spencer Rattler and the Gamecox offense.

Josh Heupel’s team was two wins away from the playoffs and is now in danger of falling out of the top 10 in the new AP top 25 and college football playoff rankings.

The North Carolina Tar Heels weren’t as much of a stretch as Tennessee to make the playoffs, but they had an outside chance to enter the conversation as ACC champions.

North Carolina capitalized on that opportunity with a shocking home loss to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The loss also marked the end of Drake May’s Heisman Trophy campaign.

Losses to Tennessee and North Carolina shared the headlines with the USC Trojans’ win over the UCLA Bruins.

USC still has some work to do to reach the top four, but should get closer to that ranking before Week 13.

Tennessee’s playoff dream died in Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday night.

Josh Heupel’s team entered Week 12 as the No. 5 team in the AP Top 25 and CFB playoff rankings.

Tennessee had a clear path to the top four because one of the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Michigan Wolverines must lose next week.

The Vols didn’t just lose, they lost in a stunning way, giving up 63 points to South Carolina.

The Gamecocks entered Saturday with 54 points in their last three games, including six in a loss to the Florida Gators.

The way Tennessee lost should tumble in the rankings and possibly fall out of the top 10.

Tennessee was the only team in the top nine to lose on Saturday. The 10th-ranked Utah Utes fell on the road to the Oregon Ducks.

Depending on the results of the next two weeks, the Vols could still make the New Year’s Six, but they are definitely out of the playoffs with two losses.

North Carolina entered Saturday with an elusive playoff dream.

The Tar Heels were the No. 13 seed in the playoff rankings, but they had a path to the conversation because they could have been the ACC champion with one loss.

That dream came crashing down at home against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. UNC couldn’t get its offense going all night and couldn’t complete the comeback at home that would have saved it from complete collapse.

North Carolina is still going to the ACC Championship Game, but heads to Charlotte as a two-loss team ranked in the middle of the top 25.

UNC can bounce back from the loss with a win over the NC State Wolfpack next weekend. That would put the Hills at a respectable 10-2 heading into their showdown with the Clemson Tigers in Charlotte.

There’s nothing to complain about coming off a 10-win season and a conference championship berth, but UNC has to be disappointed that it lost even the slightest chance to make the playoffs.

    USC won the weekend.

The Trojans’ victory over their rival UCLA Bruins put quarterback Caleb Williams at the top of the Heisman Trophy conversation.

Williams led the Trojans to 48 points to keep their playoff hopes alive and secure a spot in the Pac-12 championship game.

USC may only move up one spot in the rankings, but it would be an important one-spot move that would put them closer to the playoffs.

The Trojans will be ranked behind Ohio State-Michigan and both SEC Championship Game participants.

That means the two teams in front of USC have losses in the next two weeks, meaning the easy path for the Trojans is to win out and make the playoffs.

As we’ve seen this season, that task is much easier on paper than it is on the field. Just ask Tennessee how hard it is to achieve that feat.
