Rob McClanaghan, former SU basketball player who coaches NBA stars, arrested on rape and drug charges

Syracuse, NY – Rob McClanaghan, a former Syracuse basketball player who has become a coach for some of the NBA’s biggest stars, was arrested Friday on rape and drug charges, according to police reports and the media

McClanaghan, who lives in Warwick, Rhode Island, was arrested Friday in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, after a warrant was issued Thursday in Boston Municipal Court, according to Rhode Island television station WCVB.

The incident allegedly took place at a Boston hotel. The Boston Police Sexual Assault Unit and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office issued the warrant after investigating the incident.

McClanaghan, 43, will be arraigned Monday in Rhode Island’s Kent County Third District Court, where he will be charged as a fugitive from justice.

McClanaghan spent three seasons as a walk-on for Syracuse’s basketball team. After his playing career ended, he spent time as an assistant coach, but soon began a career coaching professional players.

He built an impressive client list that included NBA stars like Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Derek Rose and Kevin Love.

Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook are longtime clients of McClanaghan. Love is godfather to McClanaghan’s son.

McClanaghan made an appearance in the Podcast inside Syracuse Basketballduring which she said she wanted to tell her story so that people realize how difficult it is to understand what someone else is going through, and that outward appearances can be deceiving.
