Tennessee football, Josh Heupel devastated after loss to South Carolina
Tennessee College football playoff hopes dashed against South Carolina as the Gamecocks set several program records during a 63-38 upset victory over the fifth-ranked Volunteers. Josh Heupel and the nation’s top-ranked offensive lineman couldn’t match the firepower of Spencer Rattler, who threw for 438 yards and a school-record six touchdown passes.
The national media blasted Tennessee’s defense and Heupel afterward, insisting the Volunteers weren’t ready for the wasp’s nest at Williams Brees Stadium that led to the biggest win of young coach Shane Beamer’s career. Tennessee was a 23.5-point favorite coming into the game and was coming off a 66-point blowout over Missouri.
“For us to grow as a program, you have to look at this opportunity and understand what happened.” – said Heupel after his team’s second defeat. “Let it hurt and remember that as you move forward and let it grow.”
Here’s some of the national reaction that followed Tennessee’s sudden playoff exit after a memorable night for the Gamecocks.
