Why Tulane will win

The running game continues to be amazing.

The Green Wave’s offensive style excels at getting into wide open space to make big, sharp runs, and now it’s up to Taije Spears and QB Michael Pratt to make Cincinnati’s defense work.

The Bearcats struggle solidly against the rush, but have had 174 or more yards in four of their last six games. It starts with Tulane trying to set the tone for the game on the ground, then it’s down to a defense that has a crazy feast-or-famine approach to takeout.

Had five takeouts last week against SMU, four against Memphis and two more in five games. All Tulane needs is 7-0 when it forces a turnover, but …

Why Cincinnati will win

Cincinnati is undefeated in three of its last four games.

Coming off a three-game winning streak and nine of their last ten games, the team has one of the most devastating defenses in the country, an offense that is consistent through the air, and has defined its style.

Rely on defense and great punt play, keep the chains moving just enough to pass when absolutely necessary, and still rely on defense.

This is a team that knows how to win. There may be many disadvantages, but keep the score low to win.

What will happen

Cincinnati is 2-2 when allowing more than 24 points and 7-0 when allowing fewer. Also 5-0 at home.

Tulane has scored fewer than 24 points just once — but that was in a 17-10 win over Kansas State.

The winner plays for the American Athletic Conference championship game, and the loser has a chance to get there if UCF loses to USF.

So, most likely, the winner is out, the loser is out.

Cincinnati’s defense will be slightly better than Tulane’s offense.
