England lose top spot in ODI rankings after series defeat in Australia

After the 3-0 series defeat against Australia, England dropped to No. 2 in the MRF Tires ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, making way for New Zealand to take the pole position.

The reigning ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup champions suffered a rare loss which meant they went from winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 title to going clean in Australia and losing the ODI ranking tag in 10 days.

New Zealand have now regained the No. 1 status in the ODI Team Rankings.

Before the start of the series, England sat comfortably at the top with 119 qualification points, five ahead of New Zealand. However, three successive defeats saw them drop six points, eventually falling behind New Zealand (114) on 113.

Australia’s wonderful performance was also rewarded. They jumped one place to fourth with 112 qualification points, displacing Pakistan, who have 107. This meant that Australia and India are now level on qualification points, with the most points in total.

India is number 3 with 112 qualification points and 3802 overall points; Australia at number 4 with 112 and 3572 respectively.

England will have their next chance to regain top spot when they face South Africa for a three-match away series in January 2023.
