Jim Montgomery of the Bruins provides an injury update on Trent Frederic

The Boston Bruins scored one exciting win on the road against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday, one that came with one achievement of the milestone for captain Patrice Bergeron.

But it wasn’t all good news for the Bruins as they extended their winning streak to seven straight games.

Bruins forward Trent Frederic suffered an apparent shoulder injury in the contest as he had one assist in 5:14 of ice time before exiting. It seems unlikely that he will play Wednesday night when the Bruins face the Florida Panthers, but the good news is that first-year Bruins coach Jim Montgomery already knows who he will call if Frederic can’t suit up .

“It’s the day to day,” Montgomery told reporters, by video provided by the team. “With the great depth we have, I’m leaning towards playing (Craig Smith) anyway. So we’ll see how it feels tomorrow though.

Smith hasn’t played in over a week, having been a healthy scratch for the Bruins in each of the last four games. Smith last saw game action on November 12 in a road win over the Buffalo Sabres.

The veteran forward, who is in his third season with Boston, has just one goal and two assists in 10 games played this season, but Montgomery is still confident Smith will be ready as one of the team’s back six forwards when he returns to insert in the lineup.

“He and I actually had breakfast together this morning and he’s ready,” Montgomery said. “He is a professional, his attitude has been fantastic and he is well-liked by all his colleagues. And it’s a big part of the culture we have here.”
