Capitals hold Thanksgiving practice

The Washington Capitals skated at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Thursday morning.

The Thanksgiving practice was necessary because of the team’s Black Friday game against the Calgary Flames. Puck drop is at 2 p.m.—the time players usually nap before regular 7 p.m. games—and Washington wasn’t going to host a morning skate.

Head coach Peter Laviolette had no significant lineup changes after the Capitals snapped their four-game losing streak with a win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday. Alex Ovechkin scored the overtime winner to give the Caps the 3-2 comeback win.

Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir has reported on how the team has lined up.

Dmitry Orlov skated an extra pair with Alex Alexeyev suggesting he is not yet ready to return from injury. Nicolas Aube-Kubel played repetitions with Aliaksei Protas on the left side of the fourth line. Protas dressed Wednesday as NAK sat against the Flyers. Joe Snively was the extra.

The Capitals also worked on the power play. The first unit remains unchanged, while the second unit no longer features Anthony Mantha. Forwards include Evgeny Kuznetsov, Conor Sheary and Sonny Milaon.

The second power play unit also features Trevor van Riemsdyk, but how El-Bashir noted on Twitter, this is not a change. TVR has been in this spot for several weeks, but no one would know because Alex Ovechkin usually stays on the ice for the entire two minutes of the power play.

The team he was carrying a family skate after practice concluded and many of the kids on the team swirled around the ice with their parents.

After the Capitals game against the Flames on Friday, the team will travel to Newark to face the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. The Devils have won 13 of their last 14 games. The Devils’ long winning streak ended Wednesday against the Maple Leafs after giving up three goals.
