South Korea hold Uruguay to a 0-0 draw at the World Cup

AL RAYYAN, Qatar (AP) – Another favorite has failed to impress in the early stages of the World Cup.

This time it was South Korea who held South American powerhouse Uruguay to a 0-0 draw on Thursday, a result that likely favors the Asian side.

The draw at the Education City Stadium was another World Cup opener with a surprising result. Argentina and Germany lost their opening games in huge upsets.

South Korea, with striker Son Heung-min wearing a mask to protect his broken left eye socket, always looked more likely to score against the more experienced Uruguayans. The South Koreans were quicker, pressing from the opening whistle.

Some South Korean fans wore Batman-like masks in solidarity with Son.

However, in a game with few clear-cut scoring chances, Uruguay had the best chances: Diego Godin headed the post in the 43rd minute and Federico Valverde in the 89th.

Uruguay will face Portugal in Group H, while South Korea will play Ghana.

South Korea attacked from the start and Son thrilled the crowd every time he touched the ball. However, he managed just one attacking threat in the first half and did less in the second.

South Korea always looked faster than Uruguay, but not necessarily the more dangerous. The team’s best chance came in the 34th minute when Hwang Ui-jo fired a shot from close range over the crossbar.

As the half wore on, Uruguay began to gain more possession but always looked more cautious, taking less initiative despite having the most experienced players.

El Son fell hard at the beginning of the second half with Martín Cáceres getting the first yellow card of the game.

Uruguay coach Diego Alonso sent on Edinson Cavani for Luis Suarez in the 64th minute as the pace of the game slowed until Valverde hit the post in the dying minutes.
