Spartan Reacts: A sad end to the season for Michigan State fans
What a difference a week makes. Just days after Michigan State fans it was almost unanimously believed that the team would clinch bowl eligibility by defeating Indiananow they feel the upcoming game against Penn State will almost certainly be MSU’s last game of the year.
When Michigan State blew a 17-point lead against the Hoosiers, most fans also believe the team blew any chance to make a bowl. While there is still a technical remote possibility of reaching the postseason with just five wins, the season likely comes down to beating No. 11 Penn State in Happy Valley. Frankly, fans don’t think it’s going to end well.
More than 90 percent of Michigan State fans expect the Spartans to lose on Saturday, according to the latest SB Nation Reacts poll.
Penn State is a good team at 9-2, but at this point that number likely has more to do with the Spartans’ lack of belief than anything to do with the Nittany Lions. After a season where every big game turned into an embarrassment, MSU somehow found a way to keep the season going heading into senior day against Indiana, a team sitting at the bottom of the Big Ten East after seven straight losses.
Everything went as expected for most of the game. While it never looked pretty, Michigan State was able to build a three-point lead before halftime and kept the distance after trading scores early in the third quarter. That’s when everything fell apart.
Indiana went on a 17-0 run just under 22 minutes into the game. The Hoosiers then wrapped things up in the second overtime when the Spartans failed to pick up a Hoosiers touchdown.
The collapse was comprehensive. Michigan State was outmatched on offense, defense and special teams, and under-coached. In particular, those setbacks made IU’s worst loss of the season, according to MSU fans.
That kind of loss sticks to the program. It’s not something that can be forgotten after the next game or feel like a distant memory when the team takes the field again next fall. While the roster may look different next year, there’s no guarantee that one important group will change at all — the coaching staff.
Just a year removed from taking over an East Lansing team like no coach since Tom Izzo, Mel Tucker is looking a lot less polished. Tucker’s team and coaching staff have seen a list of embarrassing moments this season, but the Indiana game is probably the most glaring (at least as far as on-field action goes).
Michigan State fans aren’t keeping the loss to Indiana quiet. More than three-quarters of fans who responded said the collapse against the Hoosiers was an indictment of Tucker and his coaching staff.
While fans predict the football season will be over after Saturday’s game, the opportunity to have a say will continue. Stay tuned for next week’s Reacts poll and vote to make your voice heard.
