Question/Comment: “Hey guys. Just come visit family from Tennessee. Just so you know, there are a lot of Tennessee Vols fans in New Jersey.”

Heupel: “Come on, I like it.”

score: “Look, I know this past week has been tough for you guys and the team and us too. How ready are you guys to play Vanderbilt?”

Heupel: “Yes, of course. You go into the locker room and call it what it is. Hats off to South Carolina. We didn’t play the football we are capable of and we need to win this football match. In the end, it’s a lost opportunity. Each of them, unless you end up on the right side of the scoreboard. You can’t get them back. At the same time, I told the team in the locker room, and you heard me say it here, like it stings better and hurts everyone in the program better. It’s the only way we’re going to grow from here and have a chance to recover, and if we don’t, we’re killing ourselves as a program.

“Our guys got hurt. Our staff did. I did. At the same time, you have to learn the lessons and then you have to let it go. If you don’t, you will falter very quickly. I will say this: when we went out on the grass, the energy, the concentration, like you could feel (the loss), was gone, and that’s important. The lessons should stay with you, but you have to cut it short emotionally. After all, you only get 12 of them, that’s guaranteed, man. This is our last one of the regular season. We have so much to finish. End the regular season. Got a chance to finish with 10. Got a chance to mark a legacy for this senior class and this program as well. I’m really proud of what these guys have done in a short amount of time.”
