USC vs. Utah: Prediction, Picks, Spread, Pac-12 Championship Game Odds, Live Stream, Watch Online, TV Channel

Friday night gives #4 USC and #12 Utah national spotlight all to themselves when they meet in a highly anticipated rematch in the Pac-12 Championship Game. The Trojans are looking to avenge a 43-42 loss to Utah on Oct. 15, which remains their only blemish under first-year coach Lincoln Riley, as the Utahns look to back-to-back conference titles.

If the Trojans win, they will likely head to the Student football Playoffs for the first time in the CFP era. It would also mark the Pac-12’s first CFP berth Washington reached a field of four teams in the 2016 season. Utah has no CFP aspirations, but the Utes will become the first program since to repeat as league champions Stanford did so in 2012-13.

While there is a lot at stake for both teams, there will likely be a third fan base watching anxiously. Logically, if the Trojans lose, then #5 Ohio State will have a chance to leapfrog USC into fourth place in the CFP field when the final rankings are revealed Sunday. The side relinquished control of their destiny when they lost to the team at home Michigan last week, so now they’re hoping for a Utah win.

The first meeting between USC and Utah was a classic, and it won’t be a surprise if this one goes down to the wire and kicks off conference championship weekend.

USC vs. Utah: Need to know

Last time: When the Utes beat USC in October, the game had more than 1,100 yards of offense, including 10 touchdowns — seven passing and three rushing — and no defensive interceptions. It was Utah’s Cam Rising who got the last laugh on the USC star Caleb Williams, however. Rising scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 48 seconds left and then converted on the 2-point conversion on the next play to give the Utes the lead. Williams and the Trojans got the ball back with one last chance for a field goal in the final seconds, but were unable to do so.

The next day, USC dropped to No. 10 in the AP Top 25, with its margin for error removed due to postseason goals. But since then, the Trojans have won five in a row, including wins over ranked opponents UCLA and Mother of God the last two weeks. Since beating USC, Utah’s only loss is a 20-17 loss at Oregon November 19.

Caleb Williams for the Heisman: Williams became a Heisman Trophy favorite as a sophomore. The Oklahoma transfer who followed Riley at USC has terrorized opponents on the ground and through the air this season. Completing 34 passes compared to three interceptions and 10 more touchdowns on the ground, Williams is showing why he’s a consensus five-star prospect in the 2021 class. Take last week’s game against Notre Dame for example. Although he finished with less than 300 yards of total offense in the Trojans’ 38-27 win, Williams single-handedly saved multiple plays with his improvisation and elusiveness and scored four touchdowns in leading his team to the big win .

High stakes: This is the third time USC has appeared in the Pac-12 Championship Game since the league began hosting the game in the 2011 season. But the stakes have never been higher for the Trojans. When USC played Stanford in the 2015 Pac-12 Championship Game, the Trojans had already lost four games and were well out of the CFP. They lost 41-22 and ended up in the Holiday Bowl en route to an 8-6 final mark. In 2017, USC was 10-2 and had no real path to the CFP when it beat Stanford 31-28 and ended up losing to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl.

USC vs. Utah Prediction, Picks

Selected game | USC Trojans vs. Utah Utes

Last week, USC had to hang on for a 38-27 win over Notre Dame, while Utah easily won the Colorado. In a short week and a game between two evenly matched teams, attrition could be a factor. Utah won the first meeting by a point on Oct. 15, and the Utahns have experience at this stage as the defending Pac-12 champions. While beating the same team twice in a season can be tough, Utah did it last season against Oregon. The Utes can do it again when they take on a USC team that remains shaky on defense and over-reliant on an uncanny ability to force turnovers. Prediction: Utah +3
