Updated list of college football stars skipping bowl games in 2023 NFL Draft
The list of players who miss bowl games before the NFL Draft seems to grow every year.
Players are aware of the risks of participating in an additional game. This continues to present a risk of injury that could jeopardize their future in the sport.
But these decisions benefit teams that lose such players. When NFL starters decide to sit back and look to the future, teams get a chance to see what the next players at each position have to offer next season.
Which players will sit out their matches in 2022-2023? Sporting News tracks the stars who won’t play in their team’s final games this season.

According to OU Daily, four Oklahoma players sat out the Cheez-It Bowl against Florida State. Running back Eric Gray, who rushed 213 times for 1,366 yards and 11 touchdowns; defensive lineman Jalen Redmond, who had four sacks and 10 tackles for loss as a redshirt junior; and offensive tackles Anton Harrison and Vanya Morris will each sit.
One of the top players to opt out, Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr., announced he will miss the Rose Bowl against Utah to prepare for the NFL draft. Porter had 27 tackles and 11 pass breakups and made the All-Big Ten first team.

Opponent Penn State will also be without one of its best players. Utes running back Tavion Thomas announced before Utah’s Pac-12 championship victory over USC that he intends to sit out the rest of the season, citing a toe injury. In 2022, Thomas had 142 carries for 687 yards and seven touchdowns.

Oregon cornerback Christian Gonzalez, a possible first-round pick, announced he will sit out the Holiday Bowl against North Carolina. The redshirt sophomore registered 50 tackles, including one for loss, four interceptions and seven pass breakups.

Pitt junior linebacker Kalia Kensi, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, said he will sit out the Panthers’ Sun Bowl game against UCLA due to health issues. He will continue to help his teammates prepare for the game. He has yet to announce his intentions to declare for the NFL draft. He finished the season with 7.5 sacks, 14.5 tackles for loss and 31 tackles.
