2022 College Football Honorees: USC QB Caleb Williams Wins Maxwell & Walter Camp Player of the Year

SATISFACTION

Until the Heisman Trophy awarded by Saturday evening, college football had to spend an evening on Thursday night handing out the rest of the most famous sports equipment to individuals. It was a night of honoring linemen, specialists, skills, defensive backs, coaches and yes, even a few Player of the Year honors that may hint at what’s to come this weekend.

USC defender Caleb Williams took home both the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award, presented to the player of the year in college football. He is the fourth USC player to win the Maxwell Award, the first since Mark Allen in 1981, when Allen also won the Heisman Trophy. Williams was too CBS Sports Player of the Year this season.

Max Dagan edged out fellow Heisman Trophy finalists Caleb Williams and CJ Stroud for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s top defender, and his honor was part of a big night for TCU. Sonny Dykes was named the winner of the Home Depot Award for Coach of the Year and Cornerback Trevius Hodges-Tomlinson became the second TCU player in three years to win the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s top quarterback. And while the award was presented earlier in the week, the accolades add to TCU offensive coordinator Garrett Riley’s win of the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant.

Alabama midfielder Will Anderson was the big winner of the night, taking home the Bronco Nagurski Trophy for the second consecutive season as the top defensive player and adding the Bednarik Award — also given to the defensive player of the year — to his impressive list of accolades. Michigan center Olu Oluwatimi was also a multiple honoree on the night, winning the Rimington Award as the nation’s top center and the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior lineman.
