Miami football recruiting: Four-star CB Damari Brown chooses Hurricanes over Alabama on National Signing Day

Four-star cornerback Damari Brown announced his commitment to Miami on Wednesday on the first day of the early signing period. Brown hails from American High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and chose the Hurricanes over Alabama and Florida State. He also visited Clemson in the process of his recruitment.

247Sports ranks Brown as the No. 18 cornerback and No. 185 overall prospect in the class. His brother Wonste Brownalso a cornerback announced this week that it moves into Miami from UCF after playing in 32 games as a key cog in the Knights’ secondary over the past three seasons. Their father, Selwyn Brown, played high school in Miami in the 1980s and was part of the program’s 1987 national championship before a brief NFL playing career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Damari played in a loaded American Heritage secondary that featured other Power Five talent including Alabama freshman defensive back Earl Little II. Like Brown, Little’s father also played for Miami.

Here’s the part Brown’s intelligence report from 247Sports Southeast Recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins, who noted that Brown “sprouted like a weed” between his junior and senior seasons:

Pretty good with his technique and has been coached on how to play full court, cover the press at a high level on Friday nights. Patient feet and looser hips allow him to mirror speedy wide receivers at the line of scrimmage. Gets great depth while reversing and isn’t afraid to buy time with his hands. Constantly puts himself in position to play in the air, but seems more content to bounce the ball than win it. Has shown a desire to get physical against the run, but will eventually need to figure out how to put college-sized ball carriers on the ground and needs to get better off blocks, especially when working downfield.

Despite coach Mario Cristobal’s 5-7 debut, the Hurricanes could be ranked in the top five during this recruiting cycle.
