The Raiders’ up-and-down year will force the team to make a quick decision in 2023.

He’s a quarterback Derek Carr in or out?

The three interceptions on Saturday night have renewed questions about whether he should remain with the team. And, as he explained at the time his last contract was up, the Raiders have a way to get out of much of the deal.

But if they’re going to do that, they’ll have to act fast.

Pushed by the quid-pro-quo crowd as a solid $40.5 million deal, Carr actually received $24.9 million in 2022, and no full guarantee beyond the current season.

Carr has a salary of $32.9 million through 2023, which was guaranteed due to injury at the time of signing. Along with $7.5 million currently guaranteed for injury, he is guaranteed on the third day of the 2023 waiver deadline.

The waiver period begins after the Super Bowl. If the Raiders cut Carr and escape that $40.4 million liability, they’ll have a tight window to operate.

There are two important caveats. First, Carr cannot be traded before the guarantee vests. A casual trade could be worked out (like the Alex Smith deal in early 2018), but the guarantees would come and, if the deal fell through, the Raiders would be stuck.

Second, Carr must be able to pass a physical before the third day of the waiver deadline. That could tempt the Raiders to put them on the bubble if/when they get eliminated. (If the Dolphins win today and the Chargers win tomorrow, it’s over for the Raiders.)

If that happens — if it is announced that Carr will not play the rest of the season — it will be a clear sign of what’s to come. What would Carr probably be, after nine years with the Raiders.
