Here’s a fun fact: Aaron Gordon wears number 50 because of the many, many times he’s had that score in the Slam Dunk Contest. Here’s a less interesting fact: He’s never won the Slam Dunk Contest, despite scoring the most 50-point dunks in his history (eight). Here’s the funniest fact of the night: On Sunday, Gordon dropped a dunk that’s scarier than anything the refs have ever called.

Let’s set the scene: It’s overtime in a decisive Western Conference showdown between Denver Nuggets and Phoenix Suns on Christmas night. A win for the Nuggets gives Denver sole control of the top seed in the Western Conference. The Phoenix win keeps the four-way tie atop the conference in the win column at 20 apiece. Denver leads 124-123 with less than a minute left. Landry Shamet misses a shot that would have put Phoenix ahead. Gordon fights him off. Shamet returns to defense. Gordon ends his miserable existence on the mortal planet.

It’s hard not to feel a little bad for Shamet. He scored 31 points in the game, replacing the injured Devin Booker skillfully Had Phoenix held on to win the game, he would have been one of the heroes of the night. Instead, he not only goes down, but gets called for a foul in the process. Gordon missed a free throw, but Denver managed to win the game 128-125.

Gordon may never get the Slam Dunk Contest trophy he desires, but this dunk alone more than justifies his number.

Anyone can make a cool dunk if they are alone on the floor. Gordon may be the only player in the NBA who today can do something like that late in a key game with another man standing between him and the rim. It’s the best dunk in a career full of highlights, and certainly the best we’ve seen all season.
