NAVY, AIR FORCE, BOSTON COLLEGE, NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE, STANFORD, TOLEDO AND VANDERBILT RECEIVE 2022 AFCA ACADEMIC AWARDS
WACO, Texas. — Navy, Air Force, Boston College, Northwestern College, Stanford, Toledo and Vanderbilt University will share the 2022 American Football Coaches Association Academic Achievement Award presented by the Memphis Touchdown Club.
All seven schools registered a 100 percent graduation rate among their 2015 freshman student-athletes. The award will be presented during an honors luncheon on Monday, January 9, at the 2023 AFCA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.
This year’s award marks the 11th time the NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) formula has been used to select the winner. From 1981 to 2007, the award was presented using a formula used by the College Football Association and the AFCA. From 2008 to 2017, the criteria for the AFCA Academic Achievement Award was based on the highest NCAA GSR score and a federal graduation rate of 75 percent or higher. In 2018 and 2019, the AFCA used the NCAA’s single-year annualized percentage. The AFCA returns to the NCAA GSR in 2022.
The GSR is based on a six-year graduation window for student-athletes and holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also considers non-scholarship applicants and students at schools that do not offer athletics aid. According to the GSR calculation, educational institutions are not penalized for students who drop out and perform well. These output transfers are transferred to the receiving institution’s GSR cohort.
The Academic Achievement Award was established by the College Football Association in 1981. The award recognized the Football Bowl Subdivision institution that is a CFA member for achieving the highest graduation percentage among its football team members. When the CFA dissolved in 1997, the AFCA stepped in to present the award.
