Joe Mazzulla, Malcolm Brogdon and Blake Griffin are questionable tonight against the Clippers
Yesterday, the Boston Celtics had a virtually clean injury report ahead of tonight’s return against the Los Angeles Clippers. Today, two players woke up sick, and the manager remains questionable after a cut to his eye that kept him out of practice in Tuesday night’s win over Houston Rockets.
Malcolm Brogdon (illness, not COVID) – QUESTIONABLE
Danilo Gallinari (ACL repair left knee) – OUT
Blake Griffin (illness, not COVID) – QUESTIONABLE

The Celtics have had a bit of a run-in with seasonal ailments this month. Marcus Smart had a non-COVID illness for a few days, causing him to miss one game. Additionally, Robert Williams picked up the error, leading to his presence on the injury report after recovering from offseason knee surgery. Now, Malcolm Brogdon’s presence tonight is in doubt.
While Blake Griffin made an appearance on Christmas Day against the Milwaukee Bucks, given the Clippers’ personnel, I’d say it’s unlikely he’ll play even if he’s healthy enough to go. The Clippers have a very small and wing-heavy team. Ivica Zubac is their only consistent center in the rotation, while briefly ex-Celtic Moses Brown is also on the roster. LA often fields lineups that feature players like Marcus Morris and Nicolas Batum at center, so Griffin’s absence is unlikely to affect the rotation much tonight.
As for coach Joe Mazzulla, if his eye injury (sustained in a pick-up game) doesn’t improve, Damon Stoudemire is likely to return to the position as he did against the Rockets on Tuesday. It would be nice to be at full strength as the Clippers are one of the best teams in the Western Conference. In the last matchup, the Celtics were not at their best. now? This could be a preview of the finale.
The league-leading Celtics and Clippers tip off tonight at 7:30pm ET on TNT.
