Dec. 30 College Football Games – Orange Bowl, Gator Bowl and More | How to watch, channel, broadcast, preview, prediction

Some of college football’s most high-profile games will take place across the U.S. on Friday, including one of the New Year’s Six (although it’s not quite 2023 yet).

#6 Tennessee Volunteers vs. #7 Clemson Tigers

Well, this match seems fitting.

Clemson suffered a setback in 2021, but came back with a vengeance this season. They could have been College Football Playoff contenders if not for a lopsided loss to Notre Dame and falling to the South Carolina Gamecocks in the regular season finale. The Tigers were able to close out the bowl season on a high note by winning their 21st ACC Championship with a win over North Carolina. Clemson is 27-22 all-time in bowl games, including a 4-2 record in the Orange Bowl.

The Volunteers weren’t on anyone’s radar for a top-10 pick. However, thanks to conference wins over Alabama and LSU, they were in the hunt for the SEC East title before falling to No. 1 Georgia and the Gamecocks. It will be Tennessee’s first major league game since the 2004 Cotton Bowl and a 29-25 overall record after losing to Purdue in the Music City Bowl last season. The Vols are 1-3 in the Orange Bowl and last traveled to Miami in 1998.

This will be the first meeting between the two teams since Clemson defeated Tennessee in the 2004 Peach Bowl. The Volunteers are 11-6-2 all-time against the Tigers.

MY CHOICE: Clemson wins, 40-30

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. #19 South Carolina Gamecocks

Despite a rough start to the season with losses to Ohio State and Marshall, the Fighting Irish were able to turn things around with a respectable campaign. Although they also lost rivalry games to Stanford and USC, Notre Dame picked up wins over Clemson and North Carolina to post an 8-4 record and a trip to their 41st bowl game. The Irish are 1-2 in their Gator Bowl appearances.

The Gamecocks decided to play spoiler after all SEC East title hopes were dashed. Along with beating Clemson in the season finale. they also defeated Tennessee and, at one point, a ranked Kentucky squad. This will be South Carolina’s 25th bowl game and their fifth trip to the Gator Bowl. The Gamecocks are 10-14 in bowl appearances overall and 0-4 in the Gator Bowl.

Friday night marks the first matchup between the two programs since 1984, when South Carolina beat Notre Dame for its only win in the four-game series.

MY CHOICE: Notre Dame won, 32-18
