49ers QB Trey Lance underwent second surgery, expected to return for OTAs

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has become a steady presence on the field, but off the field there was a hiccup.

Sources say he is the 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, who began the 2022 season as the starter, underwent a second surgery on Friday on his surgically repaired ankle. The procedure went well, sources familiar with the situation say, and Lance is back on the road to recovery.

Lance was recently seen on crutches, and is expected to be out for about two weeks. The second procedure does not appear to affect his ability to prepare for the 2023 season, sources said.

“San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance had successful surgery yesterday on his right ankle,” the 49ers confirmed in a statement to NFL.com on Saturday. “The second procedure was done in September to remove the hardware that was inserted during the initial surgery.

“Due to the location of the fracture, the necessary hardware placement was close to a tendon in Lance’s ankle. During the rehabilitation process, it was shown that their proximity caused irritation to the ankle. After consultation with several experts, the decision was made to remove the hardware from the ankle to prevent future problems.

“Lance will continue his rehab process and is expected to make a full recovery and return to OTAs.”

As has been the case since December 11, Brock Purdy will start Sunday’s game 49ers against the Raiders, taking his perfect record with him. Although lost Jimmy Garoppolo to one broken foot Against the Dolphins, the 49ers haven’t lost at all.

It was Lance he declared outside After breaking his fibula and tearing his deltoid and syndesmotic ligaments by the end of the season in September, he needed surgery. Lance had a 4-6 month recovery, which was March at the latest.

As for Garoppolo, he’s out of his walking boot but not quite walking yet, sources say. It’s understandable to be able to play. In the absolute best-case scenario — and that’s unlikely — he could serve as a backup in the NFC title game (Jan. 29) or Super Bowl LVII (Feb. 12) if the 49ers land him.

Those decisions are weeks away at best.
