Alabama football radio announcer Eli Gold reveals cancer diagnosis
Eli Gold, a well-known and respected radio announcer for Alabama football games, has announced that he has cancer.
Gold missed the entire 2022 college football season as he dealt with his health and has now gone public with his diagnosis.
Gold said he is fighting a “curable form of cancer.”
“I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers,” Gold said in a statement.
“After extensive tests, I was diagnosed with a curable form of cancer. I’m already making progress and hope to be back behind the mic again soon. Roll Tide!”
Before the start of the football season, Gold announced that he would be temporarily stepping down from that role as he managed to correct a recently discovered health issue.
Chris Stewart filled that role for the Crimson Tide’s 2022 football season, while Gold called some of the broadcasts on the phone for updates.
Gold said in November that he had nearly lost the ability to walk and had been hospitalized for 170 days amid health problems.
Gold, who has been with Alabama since 1988, turned 69 in December.
