Ken Griffey Jr. will accept the Sports Legend Award in Seattle
One of the biggest superstars in Seattle sports history will return to the Emerald City next month.
Ken Griffey Jr. will receive the 2023 Royal Brougham Sports Legend Award, the The Seattle Sports Commission made the announcement Friday morning. The former Mariners center fielder and Hall of Famer is scheduled to accept the award at the 88th edition of the Sports Star of the Year Awards on February 28 at The Westin Seattle.
Previous winners of the award include Sue Bird, Megan Rapinoe, Russell Wilson, Courtney Thompson and Apolo Ohno. Honorees for all awards are selected by the Seattle Sports Commission’s nominating committee, which is comprised of local sports historians, media and industry colleagues, according to its website.
“I am honored to accept the Royal Brougham Sports Legend Award and join this list of incredibly influential figures in Washington sports,” said Griffey Jr. in a statement. “Seattle is a very special place for my family and me, and I look forward to celebrating and recognizing the achievements of fellow award winners, nominees and the sports community.”
The Kid, who is a member of the Mariners and Sounders FC ownership groups and is a senior advisor to Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred, partnered with the MLB Players Association and MLB to launch the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Swingman Classic, an all-star experience for student-athletes from HBCU Division I programs. The event’s All-Star Game will be played during MLB All-Star Week in July at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Griffey, 53, dazzled the sports world during his 22-year career, more than half of which was spent with the Mariners. He finished his career with 630 home runs, 13 All-Star Game appearances and 10 Gold Glove Awards despite injuries, and was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 2016.
Tickets for February’s red carpet event, which takes place from 5.30pm to 9.30pm, can be purchased at seattlesports.org.
