The Broncos have gotten permission from the Saints to interview Sean Payton for their coaching job
Denver Bronchi he is looking for a new coach.
The Broncos requested and received permission to interview the former New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton, According to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Schefter noted that the NFL cannot allow a team to interview Payton until Jan. 17.
Payton is perhaps the top candidate on the market. Although he is not a free agent.
Any team looking to sign Payton would have to make a tradeoff with the Saints. Payton left the Saints after last season, but it was widely believed that Payton would be back coaching within a year or two. The Saints still hold on to his contract rights.
The Broncos have already dropped a lot of draft picks as a result Russell Wilson trade Still, landing a coach like Payton might be worth giving up more options.
Payton resurrected the Saints franchise in his prime. He went 152-89 in his 15 seasons in New Orleans, and the Saints won the only Super Bowl in team history at the end of the 2009 season.
The Broncos are coming off the tail end of a miserable season. Nathaniel Hackett was fired as head coach before the end of his first season. Denver has not been to the playoffs since the 2015 season. Wilson’s struggles, along with his big rookie contract, have left many wondering if the Broncos would be stuck in mediocrity for a few years.
Maybe Payton can help the Broncos out of that hole. Denver is hopeful to find out.
