South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler announces return for 2023 season

Quarterback Spencer Rattler announced on Tuesday at a videos on social networks he plans to return South Carolina for the 2023 season.

Rutler transferred to South Carolina last season from Oklahoma and played his best football at the end of the year. He threw for 792 yards and eight touchdowns with just two interceptions in wins over top-10 opponents Tennessee and Clemson close out the regular season.

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer reacted to the news that the Rattler was coming back with a tweet that said, “Here. We. Go!!!!!!!”

Rattler joins his top receiver, Antwane “Juice” Wells, returning for next season. Wells, a first-team All-SEC selection, announced his return earlier this week after leading South Carolina with 68 catches for 928 yards and six touchdowns.

The Rattler bounced back from a rough start last season when the Gamecocks won seven of their final nine regular season games. He finished with an SEC-best 12 interceptions, but threw for a career-high 438 yards and six touchdowns in a 63-38 rout of Tennessee. The Rattler’s 3,026 passing yards ranked fifth in the SEC. He finished with 18 touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns.

Rattler was hoping for a Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma entering the 2021 season, but lost his starting job to Caleb Williams. Looking for a fresh start, Rutler transferred to South Carolina before the 2022 season. He and Beamer already had a relationship dating back to Beamer’s time at Oklahoma as an assistant.

The Gamecocks (8-5) were ranked No. 23 in the final AP poll, their first top-25 finish since 2013.
