Brandon Aiyuk sends Brock Purdy IOU after dropping the 49ers QB’s sure TD pass

Brandon Aiyuk would like a moment back 41-23 wild card playoff win over the 49ers over the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday.

The wide receiver almost gave it to the rookie quarterback Four touchdown passes by Brock Purdy day, but in the fourth quarter the ball slipped through Aiyu’s fingers in the end zone.

After the game, Aiyu ordered to make up for the drop and lamented that the QB’s incredible play was wasted.

“He did a great job,” Aiyu said of Purdy after the win. “Yes I owe him…

“I don’t know what the end zone is over there, but I have to figure it out.”

Purdy credited Aiyu for opening up in the first place.

“I was happy, ‘Okay, we’ve got a mix-up drill,’ and he kept it alive,” Purdy said. “He saw me messing around: I went left, I came back to the right. And then he ran left and then he went right, so I was excited that he kept me alive, and I was happy. I said, ‘Dude’, that was good. Then, of course, he is very hard on himself.

“He was like, ‘Man, I should’ve caught him. I hit my hands’ or whatever, but it’s all good, man. I love the guy. He works hard. He blocked Deebori [Samuel] in that long touch. You see BA gives everything for this team, so if something like this happens, it’s all good. We will learn from it and improve.”

As Purdy mentioned, Aiyu played a key role Samuel’s dagger TD runblock to his teammate for a 74-yard score.

Purdy and linebacker Fred Warner praised Aiyu for stepping into other roles on the field in addition to his receiving skills.

“Brandon doesn’t get the accolades, he probably doesn’t get talked about a lot, but when I saw Deebo block the field when Deebo took the route and scored a touchdown, people don’t do that,” Warner said. “Receivers don’t do that, that’s a big time. It’s a huge play at that point, and people probably don’t talk about it much.

“But the receivers who do that and then freeze guys off the line and do all the things that people really notice, that’s why I know he’s going to be a big player in this league for a long time because he does all the little things that it takes to play at a high level.”

Aiyuk finished the game with three receptions for 73 yards, the first 1,000-yard season of his NFL career.

And while his contributions both with and without the ball are vital to the 49ers’ success, the receiver will get a chance to make good on his Purdy “IOU” next weekend in the NFC.
