B1G Power Rating 1/17 – Hammer and Rails
Last week: 1
Again, easy choice. When a No. 1 ranked power goes 2-0, they remain in first place.
Last week: 6
This is not your grandfather’s Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights already have their best win in conference play, and after beating Ohio State and a hot Northwestern team, they are currently ranked second.
Last week: 7
The Fighting Illini have won 4 straight after starting conference play 0-3. They beat Wisconsin and Michigan State at home, as well as Nebraska and Minnesota on the road, all by at least 9 points. Illinois is starting to find its groove.
Last week: 10
Iowa has also won 4 straight after starting 0-3. The Hawkeyes beat Indiana, Michigan and Maryland at home and Rutgers on the road. Their schedule will soon increase, however, with Rutgers, Illinois and Purdue back-to-back. This streak should show if Iowa really is.
Last week: 5
Michigan split its games this week with a loss at Iowa and a home win at Northwestern. Michigan continues to struggle against established and fundamentally sound teams, but they have the talent to stay in any game.
6) Michigan State
Last week: 3
The Spartans have lost two this week at Illinois and at home against Purdue. Neither is a bad loss, but Michigan State will continue to play tough this week against Rutgers and Indiana before taking on Iowa and traveling to Purdue.
Last week: 12
Penn State won its only game of the week, beating Indiana at home. Their next game at tough Wisconsin should be interesting as Seth Lundy and Jalen Pickett have provided plenty of fireworks this season.
Last week: 4
Tough week for the Wildcats as they lost to Rutgers and at Michigan. It may be water finding its level in Evanston, but there are still plenty of opportunities for good wins at Northwestern.
Last week: 11
After losing 3 straight games, Indiana decided to clamp down on Wisconsin and didn’t even let them score 50, albeit without Tyler Wall. Indiana is still without Xavier Johnson and Rayce Thompson for the foreseeable future, but if they can play defense like they did against the Badgers, things could improve.
Last week: 2
Tyler Wall’s injury and recent schedule has definitely hurt Wisconsin, which is on a 3-game losing streak. They fell to Illinois, Michigan State and Indiana, none of which is a blowout. Wisconsin needs more points as they haven’t been able to score 70 since returning to conference play.
Last week: 8
Maryland lost its only game at Iowa since last time. The Terrapins beat Illinois State and Ohio State in points they wobbled. They lost 3 of 4, and the losses were by an average of 21 points. It will be a tough one for Maryland, as all B1G games are.
12) Ohio State
Last week: 9
Ohio State has been in a slump as of late as they have lost 4 straight, including a blowout loss to Minnesota at home. They will have to try to get straight to Nebraska and try to get back into the top half of the Big Ten.
Last week: 13
0-2 this week with road losses to Illinois and Purdue for the Cornhuskers. Fred Hoiberg’s team is 9-9 on the season and a bottom finish looks inevitable. I’m not sure how Hoiberg still has a job.
Last week: 14
Minnesota gets first Big Ten win! Despite the lack of spikes in this team, they go into every game under Ben Johnson and fight to the finish line. But that only gets you so far. The Golden Gophers welcome Purdue this week for a David vs. Goliath matchup.
