Leeds are preparing a bid for Diego Monteiro

Leeds United are lining up a bid for new Portuguese centre-back Diego Monteiro.

The Elland Road club are keen to bring the promising centre-back to England before the end of this transfer window, having identified him as part of their ‘talent foresight’ recruitment programme.

Monteiro, who will turn 18 in the last days of January, is seen as a top defensive prospect and currently plays in Switzerland with top division side Servette.

He was born in Geneva and joined Cevet as a youth player, breaking into their first team this season.

Of Portuguese descent, he was covered Portugal at youth level and is building a reputation as a defender who plays the ball with strong mobility and technique.

Leeds have already spent around £40m ($49.3m) on the first team, signing Max Wobber and George Rutter during this window, but they have been recruiting under-21s for several years and Monteiro is on their radar as the English side approach the January deadline.

The West Yorkshire side remain interested in Angers midfielder Azzedine Unahi, a Morocco international who has shone in World Cupbut have yet to decide whether to match the £20m asking price.
