There will be no international games in Mexico in 2023 due to ongoing renovations at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

“We have a long history and we continue to grow, but these international games are crucial,” NFL director Peter O’Reilly told the Associated Press. “Those who have been there and experienced it, they see the passion of the fans in these markets. There is no NFL game and team bigger and better than those markets in those markets. to be and put in a stadium”.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers he has defeated Seattle Seahawks in Munich, the NFL’s first regular season game in Germany this season. Destination cities for the 2023 games will be announced later this year. The NFL previously confirmed that Munich and Frankfurt will host games in Germany for the next four years.

The Chiefs and Patriots are part of the league’s international domestic marketing zone program, which secures international marketing rights for the teams in countries beyond the United States, as both sides have secured rights in Germany.

The Bills and Titans will play their second game in London. The Bills lost to the London Jaguars in 2015. The Titans lost to the Chargers in 2018. The Jaguars will play Game 10 in London.

The five international matches in 2022 broke attendance and viewership records, increasing the demand for tickets and the number of fans for the league worldwide. Each game was sold out, with a total attendance of 356,116.

The Chiefs, Bills and Jaguars are playing AFC divisional playoff games this weekend.

“We couldn’t be more excited to participate in a game in Germany and introduce more of the world to Chiefs Kingdom this fall,” Chiefs President and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement. “Our team and our fans have had incredible experiences in London and Mexico City as part of the International Series in the past, and we look forward to helping the NFL in their efforts to continue growing the game in Germany.”

The Patriots are 3-0 in international games.

“We are thrilled to have been selected to play in Germany this year,” said Patriots President and CEO Robert Kraft. “We are unbeaten in our previous three international matches, thanks in part to the fantastic support of our fans. We know that some of our most passionate fans live in Germany, and we hope to eventually play there. We know the fans. It will create an amazing atmosphere. The NFL’s expansion of the regular season to 17 games gives teams a ninth home game in alternating seasons. Four of the conference teams eligible for that ninth regular-season home game are designated to play a neutral-site international game each year.

The league continues to explore playing more games internationally in the future as well as the possibility of fielding a franchise overseas.

“There’s nothing close,” said O’Reilly, the NFL’s executive vice president of club business, major events and international affairs. “There are certainly complexities to work through if you’re going to have a team in Europe. That’s our responsibility to continue to look and see what’s viable. The fact that we’re having this conversation is the ability in these markets. Awesome stadiums, good government partners. Those are the basics, but It’s a complex process that requires time and alignment, but it’s our responsibility to do the work and the analysis.”
