Leeds are pushing to sign Weston McKenney before the end of the January transfer window
Leeds United are still in talks with Juventus over Weston McKenney, with the Elland Road club looking to seal a deal for the midfielder in the last few days.
McKenney, 24, has been the subject of constant talks over the past 48 hours as Leeds attempt to complete their third big January signing before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
Leeds have already spent around £40m on RB Salzburg’s Max Wober and Hoffenheim’s Georginio Rutter, and their interest in a new central midfielder has led to USA international McKenney’s move.
Azzedine Unahi has previously been on the radar at Elland Road, but Leeds have been reluctant to meet Angers’ asking price for the Moroccan, with reports in France suggesting Unahi is set to sign for Marseille.
McKenney, however, is firmly in Leeds’ sights and has declared his desire to move to the Premier League if United can agree terms with Juventus.
The structure of a potential deal for the footballer, who Juve value at more than £20m, is still being discussed.
The Serie A side are looking to make an immediate return for McKenney, who they signed from Schalke in 2020. Loan options were also discussed and talks were expected to continue today.
Leeds decided to move for McKenney after speaking to head coach Jesse Marsh.
He will become the third member of the USMNT squad to move to Elland Road in the last year, following Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson.
Leeds are also keen to complete a deal for Portuguese defender Diogo Monteiro before the end of January.
The centre-back, who plays for Swiss side Servette, turned 18 today, allowing Leeds to make a formal offer to bring him to the UK.
Monteiro is highly rated but will initially be added to the Under-21 squad at Elland Road.
