Broncos, Jim Harbaugh’s follow-up meeting failed to reach an agreement
Bronchi Owner Greg Penner and University of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh met last week in Ann Arbor to discuss Denver’s coaching position without reaching an agreement, league sources told ESPN.
Although Harbaugh announced two weeks ago that he would stay at Michigan, Penner did his due diligence and still traveled to Ann Arbor to meet with the coach in person, as he did with seven other candidates in the Broncos’ coaching search.
Follow-up interviews were part of the process for both Denver — led by Penner with general manager George Paton — and Harbaugh. The face-to-face meeting followed Harbaugh’s initial video interview with Denver, after which he withdrew his name from the discussion and reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan.
“I love the relationships I have at Michigan: the coaches, the staff, the families, the administration, President Santa Ono and most of all the players and their families,” Harbaugh said in a Jan. 16 statement. “My heart is in University. Michigan. I once heard a wise man say, ‘Don’t try to be happy, be happy.’ Go Blue!”
The Broncos also moved forward, continuing discussions with several other candidates for their head coaching position. Denver interviewed former Saints coach Sean Payton, former Colts and Lions coach Jim Caldwell, former Stanford coach David Shaw, Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and their own defensive coordinator. Ever used.
Harbaugh has now met with the Vikings and Broncos in back-to-back years and while some have indicated that their relationship with the NFL may move on, a league source announced this week that the league will move on and Harbaugh will not. likely to have many NFL options in the future.
