A misunderstanding between penalties and Ferrari in the Belgian Grand Prix qualification

M. Verstappen, like six other racers, will start from the end of the grid on Sunday due to the starting position penalties for the replacement of power plant elements.

However, in the last part of the qualification, the defending Dutch champion completed the lap in 1 minute. 43.665 sec. and recorded the best result.

Although Ferrari’s C. Sainz was unable to improve his result in the last attempt and remained second, but taking into account the fact that Verstappen was given a starting position penalty, it is he who will start the race from the first position on Sunday.

He remained third in qualifying, but second Red Bull driver Sergio Perez will start the race from second position.

At the time, another Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc, managed just one fast lap in the final part of qualifying due to a tire selection error by the team, finishing fourth.

True, he, like M. Verstappen, will receive a starting position penalty.

Alpine’s Esteban Ocon took fifth, but will also be penalized by the stewards for an engine change. Therefore, the French teammate Fernando Alonso will start from the third position.

The latter outpaced both Mercedes team athletes – Lewis Hamilton and George Russell – in qualifying.
