Solomon Islands secured 66 million A USD loan from China will be used to finance the construction of the 161st telecommunications tower on the island, with the work being carried out by tech giant Huawei, the government said on Thursday.

It is the first large-scale funding the country has received from Beijing since it signed a secret security pact in April.

The island nation’s growing financial and security ties to China have raised concerns for the United States and its allies, including Australia, which has agreed to build six telecommunications towers in the country.

Solomon Islands will receive a 20-year soft loan from the state-linked Export-Import Bank of China to fully finance the construction of Huawei telecommunications towers, the government said, calling the project a “historic financial partnership”.

Almost half of the towers will be built ahead of the Pacific Islands Games in November 2023, according to a government statement.

The telecommunications towers will allow Solomon Islanders, especially those living in rural areas, to watch the Games even if they cannot travel to the capital, Honiara, the government said.
