“That day I found an article that stated that I had been in my position for 15 years and was a ‘long-timer’ among regional managers. I thought it was a long time and decided to get your opinion. Then I found out that “longevity” is not me – the previous record turns out to be 27 years. Therefore, I will say this much: I decided to break the record. We will see if we can improve this indicator,” he said in a video message posted on his Telegram channel.
Also, R. Kadyrov assured his fellow citizens that he is not going to go even on his annual vacation.
Delfi reminds that on September 3 Chechnya’s leader said on the Telegram social network that he deserves a “long and indefinite” break, sparking speculation whether he is seriously considering stepping down or wants some favors from the Kremlin.
45-year-old R. Kadyrov has ruled Chechnya with an iron fist since 2007 and is the longest-serving leader of all Russian regional leaders, Radio Free Europe reports.
“I realized that I have been holding my post for a very long time,” he said in a video statement. – I think the time has come [pasitraukti iš valdžios].”
It is not clear what R. Kadyrov would do next if he resigned. The leader of Chechnya and Russian President Vladimir Putin have close relations, R. Kadyrov meets with him regularly. The last time they met was on August 5. in Sochi.
R. Kadyrov has made similar comments before, but he still remained in the post, so after the unexpected statement, doubts arose as to whether it was a clever tactical maneuver.
“I am skeptical. He has said so many times, said Ivan Klyszcz, an expert on the Caucasus and a doctoral student at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Science in Estonia. “Usually, his talk like this means that he wants something from V. Putin – at least a public expression of support.”
