The Žalgiris team, trained by the tandem of Gintaras Krapikas and Tautvydas Sabonis, from 9.30 p.m. (Lithuanian time) a duel with Malaga club “Unicaja” awaits.
Before the meeting with “Unicaja” coached by Ibon Navarro, which lost to Real Madrid club 91:98 on the first day of the tournament, on Sunday, G. Krapikas, speaking to “Žalgiris TV”, asserted that the Žalgiris players, above all, take care of their tasks and does not look at the opponent harshly.
“Still, the main goal remains preparation for the season, not individual matches, even if they will be the most serious test for us so far. We are looking at the general plan, the training took place in an active and intensive mode. Of course, we are also preparing for the match from a psychological point of view. Be that as it may, we didn’t analyze the opponent very much, I want to look at my side, correct the mistakes that were made even after the really good match against the Melilla team.
We have seen errors during video reviews and want to improve all of this. Ultimately, not only do we want to target a more capable opponent, but we also want to play to our strengths, which we will have in the upcoming season. So the preparation is going on at full speed and today we will be tested by the strongest opponent in this cycle so far”, said the coach.
The Žalgiris players, who arrived in Spain on Friday, crushed the Melilla team of the Spanish second basketball division on Saturday, and the team’s youngest players got a lot of time in the duel: dual-license holders Liutauras Lelevičius and Motiejs Krivas and Kajus Kublickas, the attack organizer of the backup team.
According to G. Krapik, the young Žalgiris players will not fall out of the team’s rotation in the match against Unicaja and their services will be needed.
“The preparation is not for us to play with seven players, but everyone is working honestly. Maybe the number of minutes will be slightly adjusted, but we will certainly not play only the main players, because preparations are underway,” said the specialist.
The trip of the Lithuanian men’s basketball team at the European Championship, which ended unplanned early, will not yet replenish the team’s players and coaches at the training camp in Malaga.
“If we played the match in Spain at the end of our training camp, say September 14-15, I imagine that at least the coaches would have really come. Anyway, they only returned to Lithuania yesterday, and we are playing matches today and tomorrow, so it is logical that there is no purpose for them to go here. We will see the coaches and players joining after the trip and two matches in Malaga”, G. Krapikas explained the situation.
Žalgiris will finish the three-team control tournament in Antequera on Tuesday with a duel against the Real Madrid club.
