Kyiv: Russia wants to buy time for a new attack

For weeks now, the Kremlin has been “trying to convince Ukraine to start negotiations,” Mychaila Podoliak said, as the sixth month of the war comes to an end.

During the negotiations, Moscow wants to “freeze the conflict while maintaining the status quo in the occupied territories of Ukraine,” he added.

Russia is “sending its proposals through various intermediaries,” the presidential adviser said, but did not name them because Kyiv does not currently have political ties with Russia.

The Turkish president met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the beginning of August Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered to mediate several times.

On Friday, the head of Turkey visited Ukraine for the first time in half a year.

Ukraine is convinced that Moscow really does not want serious peace negotiations, said M. Podoliaks. According to him, Russia is simply trying to secure a “break in its military operations” before launching a new offensive.

Kyiv refuses to negotiate on the territories of Ukraine occupied by Russia. He wants to reclaim those territories, as well as territories held by pro-Russian separatists in the east and Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

“All other scenarios … are just a dangerous operational pause before a new phase of the war,” Podoliak said. “Ukrainians will resist as long as necessary.”

“This is an existential war, we have no other solution. Giving up the fight means the destruction not only of the Ukrainian state, but also of all its civilian population,” said the presidential adviser.

The first negotiations between the two warring parties in the first weeks of the war did not produce any concrete results.
