Mykolas Alekna, who brought the gold to Lithuania: the season turned out much better than I expected

M. Alekna, who broke the record of the European championships, threw the discus 69.78 m in the final and left the world champion Kristjan Čeh and the British Lawrence Okoye, who won the bronze, behind him. The Lithuanian is happy that his debut season, which shone with gold and silver, far exceeded his expectations.

“I am very happy and I really want to thank everyone who supported me. I didn’t expect this year to turn out like this. The goal was 66 meters and to qualify for the World Championships, but the season turned out to be much better. I am very happy”, said the athlete after returning to Lithuania.

The athlete also told how he managed to make the most successful shot on the fifth attempt.

“I tried to make every shot as good as possible. On the fourth attempt, excitement prevented me from throwing, and on the fifth attempt, I relaxed, concentrated, and started enjoying the competition, so I managed to achieve a good result,” said M. Alekna.

The new European champion, together with his father Virgilijus Alekna, will now organize an auction of support for Ukraine, during which he will sell a special CD presented by President Dalia Grybauskaitė in 2012. Funds received for the CD signed by Aleknai will be donated to Ukraine.
