Russian soldiers in Kazakhstan are not behaving as the leadership expects them to

It has emerged that Russian military personnel stationed in Kazakhstan are refusing to return to their permanent deployment locations in Russia – for fear of being sent to war against Ukraine. This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian intelligence, the formal reason for the refusal was the lack of special air transport related to the participation of transport planes in the war in Ukraine. However, the Ukrainians claim that, in fact, the soldiers simply do not want to add to the composition of the occupation contingent. Russians who are serving peacefully enough in Kazakhstan do not want to be sent to war.

Ukrainian intelligence believes that the Russian leadership does not rule out plans to completely withdraw troops from Kazakhstan, which were deployed there in January 2022 to suppress large rallies against the Kazakh government.

We are talking about a thousand soldiers with weapons and equipment – now they protect critical infrastructure objects: airports, military training grounds, oil bases, the Baikonur Cosmodrome.

Russia has already withdrawn soldiers with weapons and equipment from the territory of Tajikistan and Armenia. They were sent to Ukraine or took the places of units sent to Ukraine earlier.
