Tyler Cavanaugh for the first time in his professional career, he is preparing for a second season in a row with the same team. The American, who joined Zalgiris last summer, will join the 2022-2023 season tomorrow. fellow clubs that have already started preparing for the season.
Aukštaūgis joins Žalgiris after the extraordinary experience of representing the USA national team in two World Cup qualifiers. The basketball player shared his thoughts with “Žalgiris TV” about this and his return to the already well-known Kaunas.
“It’s a real dream come true,” T. Cavanaugh said about playing for the US national team. “Growing up in America, you don’t even expect that one day you’ll have this opportunity.”
The Žalgiris player started working with the USA national team led by Jim Boylen in Las Vegas, where a training camp was held. T. Cavanaugh scored 5 points in the first victorious match against Uruguay in Las Vegas. In the second meeting, the native of Zalgiris was among the most useful in the ranks of the team – he scored 8 points, rebounded 5 balls, collected 14 utility points, and the USA beat the local team in Colombia.
“When I got the call, I immediately knew that I wanted to take advantage of this opportunity. I wanted to put on my shirt, hear the national anthem played. I wanted to test myself with other players, we won two matches. I met a lot of interesting people and it was unreal to experience all this”, – T. Cavanaugh was happy with the experience.
The American, who flew to Kaunas last weekend, watched the Žalgiris team in the second preseason match against the Rostock “Seawolves” club from Germany on Sunday. The Kaunas won the meeting confidently (84:68), and the tall man was satisfied with the team’s performance.
“Okay. I have seen many good things. This year’s team has many new faces compared to last season. It’s good to see our team running into a fast attack. I can’t wait to join them all myself. Of course, I also watched the newcomers to our team – Keenan, Kevarrius and Roland, who played a great game. It was fun to meet and talk with them. I’m really looking forward to the upcoming season,” said Tyler.
Evaluating the team assembled for the upcoming season, T. Cavanaugh singled out the athleticism of the new “Zalgiris” and the possibility to be even faster.
“I think we will be faster and a little more athletic. I don’t know exactly how our game will differ, because I just arrived and haven’t trained with the other guys yet, but I know that we are all motivated and determined to have a better season than the last one,” said the Žalgiris native.
For the first time in his professional career, T. Cavanaugh, who will start the second season in a row in the same team, testified that he is happy about the stage of his career in Lithuania.
“I miss my teammates, being with them. I miss being in a team atmosphere, camaraderie. I miss our apartment, it’s the first time for me as a professional that I will start a second season with the same team. So it feels good to be back where I know everything and I won’t have to look for a new place to live. It’s nice to be back. I can’t wait to start training with the team and I’m really looking forward to the season,” said T. Cavanaugh.
