Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, called the US actions “a terrible violation of the obligations of the agreement on the UN headquarters”.
“Due to the actions of the Americans, the delegation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, headed by the Minister of Internal Affairs Vladimir Kolokoltsev, could not participate in the meeting. This is another terrible violation of the obligations of the US under the headquarters agreement,” RIA Novosti quotes V. Nebenzias.
The Americans imposed sanctions on V. Kolokoltsev in 2018. – he was blacklisted on suspicion of involvement in meddling in the US presidential election. Despite the sanctions, he did get a visa several times to participate in UN events.
Once started war in UkraineV. Kolokoltsev also entered the lists of persons subject to sanctions published by the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK).
In early August, the US mission to the UN said it was taking its commitments under the visa agreement seriously. The State Department has decided that visas are required for delegations attending UN meetings.
These statements were made against the background of the Russian Embassy’s demand to issue a visa to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
In August, Russia demanded that the United States issue visas to a delegation headed by Russian Foreign Minister S. Lavrov to participate in the UN General Assembly in New York.
This was announced by the country’s propaganda news agency Interfax, citing the Russian ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov.
“We can safely say that we would like to see Sergey Viktorovich Lavrov at the UN General Assembly,” said V. Antonov.
According to him, in recent years, the United States has “repeatedly caused difficulties for Russian diplomats when they go on working visits.”
“The embassy has already appealed to the White House and the State Department with the demand to immediately issue visas to the minister and all members of the Russian delegation,” noted the Russian ambassador.
According to him, many are turning to Russian diplomats with the question of whether S. Lavrov will come to New York. The ambassador did not specify who those “many” are.
“Therefore, it is safe to say that many would like to see S. Lavrov in the General Assembly. I will remind you about his recent visits to Asia and Africa: they were waiting for him there, they wanted to meet”, said A. Antonov.
The 77th session of the General Assembly will be held from 13 to 27 September in New York.
After Russia supported the war in Ukraine in February, US President Joe Biden’s administration approved sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister S. Lavrov.
